Black Male Summit 2014

Exploring the critical issues impacting Black males in higher education

Welcome!

Black Male SummitThe University of Akron is gearing up for its seventh annual Black Male Summit, April 11-12, 2014, and this year’s gathering promises to be better than ever!

Last year’s Summit attracted almost 1,400 registrants from across the country, drawing highly-acclaimed experts from higher education institutions, public school systems, private foundations, religious organizations, and the business community.

The summit is open to all, but is geared toward the needs of the Black Male Community and will address a broad spectrum of topics ranging from networking, race relations, self-esteem, healthy relationships, and strategies for personal and professional growth. All are encouraged to attend.

In 2013, we initiated a new approach to improve student success by establishing an earlier pipeline into the high schools inviting 9th, 10th and 11th graders with GPA’s of 2.5 or better and good attendance from the Akron Public Schools. In 2014 we will expand this initiative to include the 9th, 10th and 11th graders from the Canton Public Schools. Special thanks to Superintendent David James and Superintendent Adrian Allison respectively for supporting UA’s high school component of The Black Male Summit.

See the Akron Beacon Journal article about this outreach: "Black students explore college during UA summit."

Our admissions personnel through our Vice President of Strategic Engagement, Jim Tressel, are maintaining contact with this group of students until their high school graduation and hopefully their enrollment here at the UA.

We hope you will be able to join us on the campus of The University of Akron to hear nationally renowned speakers, educational leaders, practitioners, and students explore the critical issues affecting Black males in higher education.
