‘Day in Data’ a great success

04/29/2016

The Center for Data Science, Analytics and Information Technology held a “Day in Data at UA” event recently. Students were invited to consider the many ways data is created and consumed on a daily basis at UA, then to create an image (photo or drawing) to represent that process and submit it.

The project encouraged students to be creative in finding how data is used/generated, and raised broad student awareness that data is all around us — it is generated and consumed in a myriad of ways in everyday life and activities, says Dr. Mario Garzia, the center’s executive director. By raising awareness, it is hoped students will be interested in learning more about data, big data, data science and how it impacts their lives and studies.

The center received more than 50 submissions from students, both undergraduate and graduate, from various areas of study in seven colleges across campus. The entries were posted to the center’s event page and everyone had a chance to vote for their favorites — from students to family and friends.

The top four entries with the most votes won prizes. The winners received their gifts on April 27 at a gathering for the participants and are pictured above with Garzia. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Akron Canton Section co-sponsored this event and the prizes. The center is planning more Day in Data events for students in the future.
