An exciting and highly visible public art project is being installed Wednesday, May 20, in the atrium of The University of Akron’s Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Building.

Privately funded through donations, the large-scale project will fill the atrium with vibrant color and inspiring images related to UA, college life, and academic disciplines in Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences. Pictured above is a small portion of the 40 feet by 10 feet collage.

The artwork was designed by UA graphic design students Alexander Somoskey and Brian Barr, working under the guidance of faculty members John Morrison and Janice Troutman in the UA Myers School of Art’s award-winning and career-focused “design x nine” studio. The installation was made possible by a generous contribution from Paul Thomarios, given in memory of Stiliany and Nickitas Thomarios. UA’s Physical Facilities prepped the site.

The College of Arts and Sciences Building is among the heaviest-traffic buildings on campus. The artwork will be seen and appreciated by thousands of people every week, including high school students and their families who come through the atrium for recruitment and orientation visits and current students on their way to classes and the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences Advising Office.
