Teaching and technology are at the center of the evolution of the 21st Century. Technology is a transformative tool that dramatically altered education. The global demands for technology in education are ever increasing and placing greater expectations on teachers, instructors and the ability of schools to deliver the essential skills that are on the horizon.

Davis Guggenheim

"TEACH" director Davis Guggenheim.

Davis Guggenheim, director of “Waiting for Superman,” recently directed another film, “TEACH,” with Participant Media, to identify what works in public schools; specifically, to highlight that at the heart of every great education is great teaching. “TEACH" is about the triumphs and struggles of dedicated teachers as they engage in mentoring, collaboration, perseverance and grit.

Together, Guggenheim and Participant Media have embarked on an 18-month social action/outreach  campaign to screen "TEACH" across the country. The film is being used as a tool for education classes, teacher recruitment and professional development with a larger goal of reframing and elevating the profession of teaching. Guggenheim is using “TEACH" to inspire the next generation of teachers, and as a method to support and reinvigorate existing teachers.

Screening is Nov. 6

Faculty from universities in Ohio, including The University of Akron, The Ohio State University and The University of Cincinnati are working together to extend the vision of “TEACH." On Thursday, Nov. 6, the three participating universities will host simultaneous showings of “ TEACH" on their campuses from 6:30-8:30 p.m., followed by an online town hall with members from “TEACH." The UA screening will be in Olin Hall 124. Audience members, which will include school teachers/administrators, teacher educators, university students and concerned citizens, will have an opportunity to discuss and reflect on topics explored in “TEACH."

Hosts and contacts for the evening include Dr. Brad Maguth, UA;  Brad Henry and Jessica Mercerhill, OSU; and Dr. Prentice Chandler, UC. Several teachers in the movie will attend the event.
