UA honored again as a top workplace with NorthCoast 99 Award09/17/2010
The University of Akron again has been recognized as one of the 99 best places to work in Northeast Ohio by the Employers Resource Council. UA and the other NorthCoast 99 Award recipients were honored Sept. 14 at a banquet in Westlake.
“That The University of Akron is being honored for a second consecutive year as one of the very best places to work in Northeast Ohio is very gratifying,” said Dr. Luis M. Proenza, president of The University of Akron. “The recognition signifies what we have long known — our programs, practices and opportunities for employees are on par with the best, enabling us to attract and retain highly talented people.”
The Employers Resource Council noted, in particular, the University’s efforts at employee recognition and working to create a greater sense of community. The example cited was the “Sneak Peek” event held in summer 2009 at UA’s new on-campus football stadium, InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. Employees and their families were invited to tour the facility, meet the team, and enjoy games, prizes and food.
Over last decade, more than 300 workplaces honored
In 1999, the council launched the NorthCoast 99 Awards to annually recognize the “99 great workplaces for top talent in Northeast Ohio.” In the ensuing years, hundreds of organizations have applied for the award, and more than 300 workplaces have been honored for their efforts to attract, support and motivate talented employees.
The University finds itself among such honorees as InfoCision Management Corp., Time Warner Cable, Sterling Jewelers Inc. and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, along with many health care organizations, such as Summa Health System, Akron General Medical Center Healthcare System, Akron Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic. The application process to be considered for the award is a rigorous one. Organizations are required to look at all aspects of the workplaces they have created by focusing on seven fundamental characteristics — flexibility, opportunity, recognition, development, security, support and talent integrity.
“Congratulations to all of this year’s winners for leading by example,” said Pat Perry, president of the Employers Resource Council. “NorthCoast 99 organizations have redefined the Northeast Ohio workplace in good and tough times. They have crafted a strategy and put initiatives in place designed to compete locally, nationally and globally through top performer attraction and retention. This strategy is smart and in the long run will pay incredible dividends.”
The Employers Resource Council, founded nearly 90 years ago, is now the largest organization in Northeast Ohio providing training and consulting to area companies on workplace programs and practices. Its mission is to help them attract and retain the most talented employees.
