The University of Akron's Panhellenic Association was just recognized with one of 14 Excellence Awards for outstanding work and achievements of undergraduate sorority women by the National Panhellenic Conference. UA was the only Ohio school, public or private, to receive an Excellence Award.

Student leaders of the organization include, from left in front, Leah Anthony, Gabrielle Dimengo, Panhellenic president, and Amber McCune. In the back, from left, are Melanie Kerns, Allison Ash and Shannon Francis. Not pictured are executive board members Allison Hershner and Kristin Forkapa.

The NPC, one of the nation's largest advocacy organizations for women, has recognized student-managed college Panhellenics for their achievements for more than 50 years. Other Excellence Award winners this year include George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

College Panhellenics, which are cooperatives comprised of all sororities on a campus, are scored on seven criteria, including academics, programming and community relations. This year, Panhellenic organizations at 33 colleges and universities across the country received either Excellence or Achievement awards.

Katelin L. Getz, coordinator of Fraternity and Sorority Life, serves as adviser to the Panhellenic Association on campus, which is the governing body for UA's five Panhellenic sororities.
