Commission Chair

Dr. Rev. FowlerThe Rev. Dr. Ronald J. Fowler is senior pastor of Arlington Church of God, Inc. in Akron. He served for 12 years on the Akron Public School Board and was president of the board for 1993 and 1997. He also was chairman of the Anderson University Board of Trustees from 1981 through 1991 and currently serves on the Akron Community Advisory Board of the Knight Foundation. Fowler earned a bachelor's degree at Kent State University in 1959 and a Master of Divinity degree from the Anderson College School of Theology in 1966. He pursued additional studies at Kent State University and the Jungian Institute in Zurich, Switzerland , and doctoral work at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Fowler was awarded an honorary doctorate from Anderson University in 1991.

The commission will be supported by the research and technical assistance of members of the University's Operations Advisory Committee and others drawn from various campus constituencies including Faculty Senate. In addition, the University's Board of Trustees and Alumni Association will each designate one individual to serve as a liaison to the commission.


Biographies of Commission Members

Barbara (Dirden) Mathews attended Kent State University and The University of Akron, earning bachelor's and master's degrees in education from UA in 1966 and 1974, respectively. In 1965, she began a long and positive career with the Akron Public Schools. She retired as deputy superintendent in 1994, joined FirstMerit Bank and now is its senior vice president and manager of public affairs. Mathews has been president of the Akron Roundtable and Summit Education Initiative and continues to serve on both boards, as well as those of Summa Health Systems, The United Negro College Fund (Akron), Coming Together and the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. Mathews is a retired trustee and past president of the Summit County Children's Services Board and a former officer of the Akron, Ohio and National Alliances of Black School Educators. She currently is co-chair of the Akron Urban League's capital campaign.

Frederic L. Zuch is a retired Summit County prosecutor with 30 years of public service, during which he was twice named Ohio Assistant Prosecutor of the Year. Zuch worked as an Akron police officer, a city prosecutor and a county prosecutor before retiring in May 1997 after 16 years as the chief of the criminal division in the Summit County Prosecutor's Office. He has since served as a consultant on law enforcement matters. Zuch earned a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1972, both from The University of Akron. He currently serves on the board of the Summit County Emergency Management Agency and operates a wholesale field nursery business.

Image of CarroJ. Dean Carro, the president-elect of the Akron Bar Association, is a clinical law professor and the Dean's Club Professor of Law in The University of Akron School of Law. He has earned bar admission for the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. District Court - Northern District of Ohio, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit and the State of Ohio. Carro was the Federal Court Monitor for the Summit County Jail in 1983-1993 and a member of the Summit County Performance Audit Review Committee for the Summit County Children's Services Board. He earned a bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1974 and a juris doctor degree from The University of Akron in 1978.

Umage of John QueenerDr. John E. Queener is an associate professor of education and a licensed psychologist. He serves as a vice chair of the University's Institutional Review Board and as a member of the Pan African Studies advisory board and the University's Inclusive Excellence Team, which is overseeing an Association of American Colleges and Universities' pilot project called Inclusive Excellence: Diversity, Inclusion and Institutional Renewal. A member of the American Psychological Association and the Association of Black Psychologists, Queener also is the lead psychologist for Minority Behavioral Health, a community-based not-for-profit mental health agency. Queener earned a bachelor's degree from the College of Wooster in 1984, a master's degree from The Ohio State University in 1987 and a doctorate from The University of Akron in 1995.

Dr. Linda M. Subich is a professor and associate chair of psychology in the University's Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, as well as a Fellow of the University's Institute for Life-Span Development and Gerontology. Subich also is a Fellow of Division 17 of the American Psychological Association and in 2000 received the John Holland award for outstanding achievement in career or personality research. She has been published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Career Assessment and Career Development Quarterly. Subich earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1977 and master's and doctoral degrees from The Ohio State University in 1979 and 1981, respectively.

Johnson-WhittA former forensic chemist for the Cleveland Police Department who now is a Health and Science Resource Specialist for the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland, Eugenia S. Johnson-Whitt is a graduate student pursuing a doctorate in education at The University of Akron. Johnson-Whitt is a board member of the Cleveland Regional Council of Science Teachers and a member of Ohio Science Supervisors, National Science Teachers Association and Science Education Council of Ohio. Since 1990, she has been a police academy instructor for Cuyahoga County Community College. Johnson-Whitt earned a bachelor's degree from Central State University in 1987 and a master's degree from Cleveland State University in 1997.

Elizabeth_KovacElizabeth M. Kovac is serving her second year as a student trustee on The University of Akron's Board of Trustees, on which she is a member of the Board's Educational Policy/Student Affairs and Facilities Planning and Oversight committees. Kovac is a senior in the Honors College and majors in both marketing, and e-marketing and advertising. A Buckingham Scholar, she is president of the Honors Delegates, vice president of the Honors Business Group, and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honorary and Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honorary.
