Cloud Computing for Higher Education

"The transformative power of cloud computing is being utilized today by institutions large and small. It is changing business models, cost models, and data centers. Innovative [institutions] are freeing up valuable resources for strategic activities by deploying cloud applications that are less costly and complex, yet more intelligent and user friendly, than on-premise applications.

"Higher education institutions, however, have unique missions and strategic objectives. Given these differences, can cloud computing be successfully deployed in higher education? Can cloud technology help higher education . . . meet [its] priorities today and in the future?" (Workday whitepaper, Cloud Computing for Higher Education)

In the first phase of this project, The University of Akron is assessing the feasiblity of turning to cloud computing for some of its back office systems, like Information Technology, Human Resources, Payroll, and Benefits.
