 Institute Goals:
- Share unique features of The University of Akron/University Park Alliance initiative.
- Discuss more thoroughly among colleagues and community partners what it means to be an engaged university.
- Inspire attendees to generate their own project ideas whether in community engagement broadly, across academic units at the program leadership level, or individually as service-learning practitioners.
This “engaged” and experiential institute will provide opportunities for attendees to share ideas and develop a proposal or action plan in community engagement and service-learning. Participants will have the opportunity to apply for mini-grants for projects conducted within University Park Alliance and City of Akron neighborhoods.Where:

April 28, 2008, 12:30pm – 4:00pm, “Service-Learning 101” **
Jen Gilbride-Brown of Ohio Campus Compact will lead a workshop on the meaning, benefits and best practices of service-learning. Components include course design, syllabi/project construction, reflection strategies, and tools for evaluation.
April 29, 2008, 9:00am – 4:00pm, Interactive Exhibit Hall and Keynote Speakers
The interactive exhibit hall will spotlight community engagement and service-learning practices. Attendees will be purposefully guided through selected exemplars based on their areas of interest. This means pre-registration is ideal.
Kenneth M. Reardon Ph.D. was a community organizer for the New Jersey Federation of Senior Citizens, the Connecticut Citizens Action Group, and the New York Citizens Alliance. While a professor in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Reardon established the East St. Louis Action Research Project. He is currently on the faculty in the Department of City and Regional Planning at Cornell University.
John Saltmarsh Ph.D. is the director of the New England Resource Center for Higher Education (NERCHE) and a professor in the Higher Education Administration Doctoral Program, Department of Leadership in Education in the Graduate College of Education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. From 1998 through 2005, Dr. Saltmarsh directed the Project on Integrating Service with Academic Study at Campus Compact.
Participants are encouraged to attend both days for maximum benefit.
