Jen Gilbride-Brown
of Ohio Campus Compact will present a workshop on Thursday afternoon covering the following key components of service-learning:
- What is
service-learning?
- Benefits of
service-learning
- Best practices
in reciprocal partnership
- Service-learning
course design and syllabi/project construction
- Reflection strategies and tools
for evaluation

Dr. Jen Gilbride-Brown

Director: Faculty and Campus Development at Ohio Campus Compact
Jen Gilbride-Brown received her Ph.D. in
Educational Policy & Leadership at The Ohio State University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on racially
underrepresented college students’ experiences in service-learning. Before
joining Ohio Campus Compact, she taught an undergraduate leadership course
using service-learning at Ohio State University. She has been involved with a variety of
community organizations working on emergency food assistance, nutritional
support for people living with HIV, and after school academic support
opportunities. Jen also served on the
leadership board of the ASAP after-school support program at Broad Street
Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio.

Byron White received his Ed.D. from the Graduate School of
Education at the University of Pennsylvania. He is currently the Vice President for
Community Engagement at Xavier University in Cincinnati, and founding Executive
Director of the university’s James and Delrose Eigel Center for Community-Engaged Learning. He is highly
respected in the service-learning community as he publishes articles on the
topic, consults with community groups and institutions on
institutional-community engagement, is involved with community-media relations,
and develops asset-based community development.

Barbara
A. Holland received her Ph.D. in Higher Education Policy from The University of
Maryland at College Park. At this time, she works at the University of Western
Sydney as Pro Vice-Chancellor Engagement in June 2007. In this position, Dr.
Holland is responsible for overseeing service-learning for the University and
develops systems to monitor and assess service-learning impacts on faculty,
students, and communities. Her 18 years of experience with implementation and
assessment of community-based learning, community-campus partnerships,
institutionalization of community engagement and organizational change
strategies assessment of community-based learning makes her an expert in the
field of service-learning.
