1. Apply social work values and effectively utilize helping skills and a planned change process to provide helping interventions within a Social Work Assistant’s scope of practice.
(wording changed in Spring 2007)

1. Social Services Practicum Evaluations completed by agency field work supervisors for two required practicum experiences provide the data used for program-level assessment and this report. Course-embedded assessments in core program requirements provide initial evidence of the achievement of this outcome; these assessments include direct value-added assessment. Course assessments then help to determine eligibility for field work. Student self-assessments in an Assessment Portfolio both at entry and exit points and in many program courses provide additional assessment data.

16 students completed a Social Services Practicum in AY 2006-2007. On a scale of 1-5 on the Social Services Practicum Evaluations, agency field work supervisors rated all students 3 and above on items selected to assess this outcome. 88% of students were rated 4 or 5.

As part of the continuing changes that are being implemented with regard to the field work component of the curriculum, the link between course-embedded assessments and students’ application process and eligibility for a practicum will continue to be strengthened. In addition to submission of their own progress reports in their Assessment Portfolios, a form is being drafted to provide assessment results from core program requirements for individual students. This would also facilitate the analysis of data on an aggregate level and would provide internal program-level assessment results to complement the external assessment data currently provided through Social Service Practicum Evaluations completed by agency field work supervisors. Because this will require coordination among a number of different full-time and adjunct faculty members, plans are underway to have preliminary discussions about this process over the summer in anticipation of piloting the system with the incoming program majors in Fall 2007. In AY 2007-2008, the process for reporting assessment results from individual courses will also be reviewed in an effort to make this process more systematic and to provide data that is more useful for program-level assessment. Major revisions in the instrument used by agency field work supervisors in evaluating practicum students are also underway, with plans to pilot the revised instrument in Fall 2007.

For this outcome, the two practicum instructors reported results from case studies completed by students in which they discussed how environmental forces, including social policy, impacted the individuals/
families who were the focus of their case studies. All students were able to successfully identify pertinent information and to articulate an understanding of important macro-level concerns.

9. Possess the knowledge base necessary for preprofessional social work practice and the educational foundation needed to pursue a bachelor’s degree in social work.

9. Course-embedded assessments in core program requirements provide evidence, to some extent, of the achievement of this outcome; these assessments include direct value-added assessment. Student self-assessments in an Assessment Portfolio both at entry and exit points and in many program courses provide additional assessment data. However, the best assessment would be evidence regarding students’ performance in bachelor’s degree programs, which does not exist in a formal sense at this time. Anecdotal evidence from program graduates, employers, and social work faculty and administration indicate that students who receive an associate degree from Wayne College’s program are well-prepared and perform very well. The revisions in the practicum evaluation instrument that are being finalized at the present time include the addition of items that solicit feedback from agency field work supervisors regarding the overall preparedness of students and particularly evident strengths and/or weaknesses. In Spring 2007, two assessments were also developed and piloted with several students who were applying for a second practicum. If time permits, questions from other content areas will be added to these assessments before students complete them next year. Future plans include eventually tracking students’ performance through the School of Social Work; comparisons of Wayne graduates with other bachelor’s-level graduates could be considered, if data are available, with regard to rates of passing the licensure exam and/or of pursuing master’s-level education.
