Student Success Planning
Our Plan

Core Competency Assessment of Undergraduate Student Achievement and Learning (CAUSAL)

This project is about developing a framework for student learning outcomes assessment for a set of core competencies. As shown in the schematic below, the framework views entry level courses as the foundation and major programs as the arena for continued reinforcement and integration of skills and knowledge. We are currently facilitating campus-wide conversations that will allow the campus community and constituency groups to contribute to the development of the core competencies. Eventually, these conversations will expand to provide continuing feedback into the assessment process. Our project will focus on course embedded assessment in coordination with other efforts that form part of our Student Success Planning, such as the Student Assessment Taskforce (SATF) and First Year Experience (FYE) programs.

The following tables document our efforts in developing specific activities and timelines. Table 1 lists a number of specific tasks that will yield the process for outcomes assessment, i.e the assessment framework. Table 2 identifies the activities to establish an initial set of learning outcomes centered around core competencies for our university. The plan is to complete these close to the end of 2007. All of the activities listed in the tables allow our team to spend some time holding campus wide campus conversations and planning for the full project timeline. The timelines allow us to have a realistic projection of the possible work that can be accomplished during the short term.
