How To Repair Disk Permissions

Some common problems, such as applications not loading or exhibiting strange behavior, can be fixed by repairing permissions. Because Mac OS X is based on Unix, it utilizes ownership and permissions. Sometimes, key system files have their permissions changed to something other than what they are supposed to be by applications and, more often, installers. Repairing permissions fixes any accidental changes that may have occurred to the ownership and permission of key system files. It is important to boot from a OS CD or DVD in order to repair disk permission on your computer. This procedure repairs disk permission on System files too.

Open a finder window. Go to Applications -> Utilities -> and click on Disk Utility.

The Disk Utility window will open. Click on the drive partition which you want to repair disk permission on. Normally it is labled "Macintosh HD".

Click the Repair Disk Permission Button. This process might take awhile depending on how bad the file permissions are damaged.
