How do I get a network printer setup in my department?
These instructions are intended to show how PC Services can facilitate the setup of a printer with networking capabilities.
The printer must have network capability.
No personal printers – inkjet
Some HP printers have internal Jet Direct cards
There are some Net Print boxes that connect to the printer with a parallel cable
There are some HP external Jet Direct boxes that connect to the printer with USB
Some Multi Purpose printers use proprietary network connections
The printer location must have a network connection.
No switches or hubs
Create a ticket to WAN to get a static IP number for the printer.
They need:
Building
Room
User name
Department
Printer Type
If a vendor is delivering and setting up the Multi Purpose printer they have to setup the IP number, gateway and subnet mask.
If PC Services sets up the printer than we setup the IP number, gateway and subnet mask.
IP number: 130.101.xxx.yyy
Gateway: 130.101.xxx.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Create a ticket to LAN to create a Network Printer Queue.
They need:
Building and room
User name and department
IP number
Printer Make, Model, and Options – i.e.: Aux. trays, collator, stapler. Vendor name and number in the case of a Multi Purpose printer
You might be able to work a schedule with LAN so that you can setup the IP number and LAN will setup the print queue at the same time.

How do I backup my data?
You should store your data on your department’s network drive, usually called the H: Pc Services will create you a folder on the H: that is your last name. ie. H:\Isner. We prefer to lock that directory so that only you can see the data in it. There should be a directory H:\shared that will allow you to share data with others in your department. The H:\ is backed up every night and data can be restored if you call the Help Desk.
Some computers have a writable CDRW or DVDRW drive. You can buy the blank media supported by your drive and “burn” a copy of your data. CDRWs can hold up 700MB of data and a DVDRW can hold up to 4.5GB. These numbers change as the technology advances.
