Information Technology Services

Network Services supports all University of Akron data communications. These responsibilities include on-campus and off-campus Internet and network connectivity for all faculty, staff and students. Network services installs and maintains wired and wireless connections in all academic buildings including: labs, university libraries, etc., as well as, residence halls and campus green spaces. Network Services is also responsible for network security, documentation and the installation and maintenance of all campus alarm systems.

Campus Backbone/Connectivity:
This division of Network Services is responsible for wired data connections at the University of Akron. The network has a 10 Gigabit Ethernet backbone which currently supports approximately 10,000 data connections. Campus Wireless Network:
This division of Network Services is responsible for wireless data connections at the University of Akron. In the Spring of 2001, we began the installation of 1,200 wireless data access points on the U of A campus. 650 Cisco 350 series wireless access points have been installed to date. Network Security:
This division of Network Services is committed to and diligent in the pursuit of network security for the University of Akron. Several security programs are in place to detect and prevent illegal and harmful network usage. Administrative Network Documentation:
This division of Network Services is responsible for documentation of the network at the University of Akron. Because of the size, complexity and dynamic physical topology of the University network, it is extremely important to maintain complete and accurate documentation.
