The University of Akron has a fiber backbone to
all of the buildings on its main campus. The
campus network, called UAnet, has more than
10,000-networked computers, approximately 1500 of
which are in student labs. One hundred percent of
the residence hall rooms have network
connections. The remainder of the residence hall
space is covered by wireless access to the
network. Academic buildings are fully covered for
network access via hard wire and wireless
connections.
The University of Akron offers off campus remote
access to the UAnet network and the Internet for
U of A community members via PPP dial-in lines
and cable modem connections. U of A students,
faculty and full-time staff can access the
Network and the Internet, 24 hours a day 7 days a
week, via 542 PPP dial-in lines, at no cost, with
a valid UAnet ID. Also, U of A, students, faculty
and full-time staff can also access the Network
and the Internet, 24 hours a day 7 days a week,
at minimal cost, with a valid UAnet ID via the
Ohio Broadband Educational Network (OBEN). OBEN
is a High Speed Internet Access made available
through an exclusive agreement between The
University of Akron and Time Warner Cable.
