NETWORK DOCUMENTATION

The University of Akron's wired network is a partial mesh configuration. The core consists of two Cisco 6513 switches which are linked to six 6513 switches and three 6509 switches in its Distribution layer. One Distribution switch is connected to only one core switch via a 3524. The other eight switches are each connected to both core switches, which are in turn connected to each other. There are (42) 4006 switches, (40) 3548 switches, (39) 3524 switches, (51) 2900 switches, (18) 1900 switches, (9) wireless bridges and (625) wireless access points connected to the nine switches throughout the campus providing access to the network to the U of A campus community.

The network has a 10 Gigabit Ethernet backbone with endpoints being switched Ethernet. The network connects to the Internet, via OARnet, the regional Internet service provider, with 42 Mbps of Bandwidth. There are (542) PPP dial-in lines. There is also High Speed Internet Access made available through an exclusive agreement between The University of Akron and Time Warner Cable, Ohio Broadband Educational Network (OBEN). There are three options for accessing the University computer network and the Internet from your home. Click Here to view details. The University of Akron's Wayne College is connected to the main branch's network with Gigabit Ethernet for data and one T1 line for voice. The U of A has a fiber based, OC12 & OC 3 ATM network to connect high schools in neighboring Medina County for distance learning.

Because accurate and up-to-date documentation is essential to any network, especially one as intricate and dynamic as the U of A's network, this page will be updated continuously as new and relevent documentation becomes available. Please be sure to check back on a regular basis. If there is documentation that you feel should be added to this page, please e-mail me with your suggestions. Documentation for Network Services is maintained by Yolanda Carter.
