WIRELESS NETWORK |
The University of Akron has begun installing approximately 1200 Cisco Aironet® 350 Series access points to create a wireless infrastructure that will encompass all instructional space, residence halls, houses, the library, campus centers, the alumni association, arenas, and other
places where students congregate. Upon completion, the wireless LAN (WLAN) system will cover 75 buildings and will serve 35,000 people. All 24,000 students who attend the university and all 6000 full- and part-time employees will have the ability to connect to the university's information system infrastructure and the Web through the Cisco 802.11b wireless standard.
The wireless coverage will spread into campus green areas such as tree-lined courtyards, commons and park-like open spaces; ultimately, only areas such as parking decks and tennis courts, which are too far from the campus, will remain outside the wireless network. Virtually every other part of the 5.4 million square feet of building space will be included-even the football stadium (but only the Akron fans' side, of course). The wireless project is part of a larger program that uses Cisco equipment to upgrade campus systems. For example, the Cisco 6500 product line was employed in replacing the campus' asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) backbone with a gigabit network. The change to a gigabit network will give the university greater bandwidth and allow more intensive video and voice applications to be run across the network. Beta testing of the Cisco 10-gigabit network and VoIP is starting this fall.
The Campus Wireless Network is administered by Mark Porter and Doug Miller. You can contact Mark at x5235 or Mark Porter and Doug at x8322 or Doug Miller. |
