Edward L. Gilbert graduated from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio with a major in Theoretical Economics and a minor in Speech. His college activities included varsity football and service as an officer of the Black Student Union. He received the Schwartz Award for general excellence in college work. He went on to graduate from The University of Akron School of Law and served as President of the Black American Law Students. After graduation from law school, he worked in Industrial Relations for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, was Human Relations/Personnel Director for U. S. Department of Labor projects for the City of Canton and Stark County, and served as an assistant Summit County Prosecutor before entering into private practice in 1982. He is currently a partner in law firm Slater, Zurz & Gilbert, concentrating in civil rights and employment law. In the area of employment litigation, Mr. Gilbert has literally tried hundreds of cases and has obtained millions of dollars in his career for his clients. Mr. Gilbert is recognized around the country as an expert in the area of employment litigation. Mr. Gilbert is former Special Counsel to the Ohio Attorney General, former president of the Akron Barristers' Association, former Board member for the Akron Urban League and Community Center, former executive board member for the Great Trail Council Boy Scouts of America, former member of allocation committee of the United Way, Chairman and Past Chairman of the Legal Redress Committee for numerous branches of the NAACP, and former Executive Board Member for the Region 10 Council on Alcoholism. Notable achievements of Mr. Gilbert include receipt of the NAACP National Outstanding Corporate Membership Award as well as a highlighted feature in U.S. News and World Report on developing legal dialogue in the local community on racial relations. Mr. Gilbert has been very supportive of The University of Akron School of Law including establishment of the Edward L. Gilbert, Esq. Jurist-in-Residence Program which was developed to help enhance the national and international prestige of the School of Law, to promote serious conversation and debate on minority issues in the United States and throughout the world, to promote faculty diversity and to advance teaching excellence at his alma mater. The Edward L. Gilbert, Esq. Jurist-in-Residence Program invites international jurists to the School of Law to augment curriculum and career planning and placement offerings for law students and law alumni, to provide formal and informal professional development opportunities for faculty and members of the bar, and to contribute scholarly articles for publication in the Akron Law Review. He also donated to the New Business Legal Clinic at the Law School and the Edward L. Gilbert Book Scholarship. Mr. Gilbert is married to Delphenia and they are the proud parents of one son, Hayden.
