Getting Involved - How You Can Help
Your knowledge of career development and the legal market is very valuable to fellow Akron Law alumni and current students. The Career Planning & Placement Office appreciates the experience and advice that our alumni can provide to Akron Law graduates and current students as they explore options and embark on their legal careers. We regularly seek alumni, both locally and across the country, willing to share their time and insight with future attorneys. The following is a list of some of the ways that we hope you will choose to give back to Akron Law:
Become a mentor. The Office of Career Planning & Placement , in conjunction with The Akron Bar Association Liaison Committee, pairs University of Akron Law students with local lawyers for the purposes of assisting law students in beginning the transition from law school to law practice, through a one-on-one relationship with a practicing attorney. The mentor provides perspective on the law school experience and its relationship to practice; helps the student understand the nature of different practice areas and types of employers; and has the opportunity to advise the students on networking and career resources. Above all, the mentor is a role model who conveys his/her commitment to the profession and the responsibility that comes with admission to the bar. Mentor program information is made available to all second year students in October of each year. Please consider volunteering to become a mentor to a current second year student. Please call the Career Planning & Placement Office at 330-972-5321 or visit the Akron Bar Association website for further information.
Speak on a panel. Throughout the academic year, the Career Planning & Placement Office hosts a variety of programs and panels addressing different practice areas, trends in the law, interview tips, resume tips, networking, and more. Consider speaking on one of these panels or giving a presentation about your area of law or career path. To learn more, to volunteer, or to suggest a program, please call the Career Planning & Placement Office at 330-972-5321.
Serve as a mock interviewer. Each fall and spring, the Career Planning & Placement Office hosts a Mock Interview Day. Akron Law alumni and friends of the Law School come to the school to conduct mock interviews with current students. These mock interviews give the students an opportunity to practice their skills and receive feedback from someone with real world experience. The Career Planning & Placement Office strives to include interviewers from all types of employers, including private practice, government, corporate, and public interest. To learn more or to volunteer to conduct a mock interview, please call the Career Planning & Placement Office at 330-972-5321.
Conduct an employer outreach meeting. Throughout the year, Alisa Benedict O'Brien, the Director of the Office of Career Planning & Placement, travels the country to meet with alumni and employers in an effort to learn what employers are looking for in candidates and to share information about the law school and its students. Consider sharing your advice and knowledge with us in this way. To learn more or to schedule a meeting, please contact Ms. Benedict O'Brien at 330-972-8540 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Participate in our Interview Programs. Make sure there are more from your alma mater at your work! Participate in our on-campus interview programs. To learn more, please contact the Career Planning office at 330-972-5321.
