Copley High School is looking for Akron Law students who are interested in serving as judges for the school’s Speech and Debate Team with events including Public Forum Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and perhaps Student Congress Debate. Law students who judge any of these events will spend at least four hours per tournament. One round of Public Forum Debate generally is 40 minutes in length and Lincoln-Douglas is 45 minutes. At different tournaments, there are four rounds of debate. The Copley Speech and Debate coaches will offer training to anyone prior to judging on their own. Individuals who judge will need a legal pad, a pen, and a stopwatch, and Akron Law will provide these needed materials for law students who judge. The hours that a law student spends as a judge for the Speech and Debate Team (including training time) will count toward his or her community service hours requirement. For more information about this community service opportunity, contact Shannon Rote, director of forensics and head coach for Copley’s Speech and Debate team (Shannon.Rote@copley-fairlawn.org, 330-322-7679 on her cell, or 330-664-4875 at the high school).
If you are interested in any of these opportunities, or would like additional information, please contact Professor Joann Sahl in the legal clinic: email@example.com or 330-972-7189
