The latest figures (2009) from the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization indicate that 1.5 million Americans received hospice services from over 5,000 hospice programs in the U.S. A total of 42 percent of all U.S. deaths in 2009 were under hospice care. Hospice Care and the related ethical and legal concerns of end-of-life Care are increasingly becoming an important topic for discussion as more than 78 million Americans will begin to turn 60 this decade.
