The University of Akron
Counseling, Testing and Career Center (CTCC) is a comprehensive psychological services center with a permanent staff of 6 licensed psychologists with doctorates in counseling or clinical psychology. The CTCC is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS).
The CTCC has a national pre doctoral psychology internship program that is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). There are therefore 3 full time APA interns each fiscal year who are considered to be University of Akron contract professionals as are the psychologists. The interns are in the final stages of completing doctorates in counseling or clinical psychology from universities across the country. Therefore most come to CTCC having only the dissertation to complete or they have completed the dissertation but all need the full time internship to officially complete the doctorate.
CTCC also has practicum counselors who are doctoral students in The University of Akron doctoral program in counseling psychology. Their experience at CTCC is part of their advanced practicum class therefore we may have 6-8 each semester. The practicum counselors work 8-10 hours per week and they are not paid. They are often in their last clinical experience prior to applying for internships. All unlicensed persons (interns, practicum counselors) are supervised by the licensed psychologists in CTCC. Practicum counselors videotape sessions and interns audio tape sessions.
CTCC works on a short term therapy model, however there are no official session limits. Students therefore may be seen for just a few sessions or they may in some cases be seen for several semesters. CTCC offers personal counseling, relationship counseling, career counseling, workshops and ongoing groups. Counseling is free. Testing associated with counseling may involve fees. Personality and career counseling tests usually cost about $10.00 per test. A learning disorder battery costs $100.00.
There is no psychiatrist on campus therefore students with medication needs may be referred to The University of Akron Health Services or to psychiatric services in the community. The CTCC has asked that a part time psychiatrist be added to the staff.
As was noted earlier students may be assessed for a learning disability at CTCC. A report is written and if a disability is found the report is sent to The University of Akron Office of Accessibility. The Office of Accessibility will work with the student regarding accommodations. The CTCC provides a series of workshops on various academic performance topics such has Study Skills, Test Anxiety etc. and provides some minor individual educational counseling. Tutoring services are provided by other offices on campus.
