He graduated from Northwestern University School of Law, has specialized in trademark and unfair competition law for more than 35 years, and is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and eight United States Courts of Appeals. He handles trademark trials and appeals in the federal courts and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, mediates trademark disputes, and handles a wide variety of counseling and drafting in the field.
Euromoney Publications PLC, in its April 1998 issues of Managing Intellectual Property, named Mr. Gilson the top trademark law practitioner in the world The honor was based upon a worldwide survey of both in-house and private practice trademark law practitioners.
Mr. Gilson is Co-Author with his daughter Anne Gilson LaLonde of the standard legal treatise Trademark Protection and Practice (LexisNexis/Matthew Bender), and has written and spoken widely in his field. He served as Reporter on The United States Trademark Association Trademark Review Commission, and testified before and was actively involved in Congress at the time of the Trademark Law Revision Act of 1988. Mr. Gilson participated in the drafting of both. He served as an advisor for the American Law Institute Restatement of the Law (Third) of Unfair Competition, and was Counsel to the International Trademark Association (formerly The United States Trademark Association) for three years.
