Young Kim received her B.S. in 1977 from the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea, and her J.D. in 1993 from Franklin Pierce Law Center in Concord, New Hampshire. She was admitted to the Korean patent bar in 1979 and the Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. bars in 1994 and 1996, respectively.
Ms. Kim is a Senior Partner at Kim & Chang and has practiced intellectual property law, especially patent law and licensing. She has handled numerous landmark patent cases, including Supreme Court cases involving the issues of inventive step for a chemical invention, doctrine of equivalents and description requirements for a pharmaceutical invention.
In addition to an extensive private practice, Ms. Kim serves on the Industrial Property Dispute Resolution Committee of the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Committee of WIPO, and the National Arbitration Forum (NAF). She is the former director of the Korean Patent Attorneys Association (1994 to 1998). She is a member of AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Industrial Property), AIPLA (American Intellectual Property Law Association), APAA (Asia Patent Attorneys Association) and LES (Licensing Executive Society).
Young Kim has been a guest speaker at various intellectual property conferences, including WIPO symposiums, AIPLA meetings, ABA meetings, Computer Law Association seminar and CLE International seminars. She has been a lecturer for some programs at the International Intellectual Property Training Institute in Seoul, Korea. She is also the author of the publication of Background Reading Material on the Intellectual Property System of the Republic of Korea (November 1996, WIPO).
