Our School was represented in the Regional Competition of the
Association Of The Bar Of The City of New York Moot Court competition this past week by two teams of students. As a result of their efforts the University of Akron School of Law will be represented in New York City in January at the National Competition. This is only the second time in the history of our School that we have sent teams to this prestigious and oldest of moot court competitions.
The members of one of our teams, Chris Panek, Kim McMullen, and Brian Jones , had the fourth best brief in the competition out of fifteen briefs. They did not advance out of the preliminary rounds. Success is not achieved in a vacuum. While this team did not advance, their strong efforts in practicing against the other team certainly paid dividends.
The members of the other team, Shane McCammon, Michelle Schuld, and Paul Zindle, had the overall best brief and finished second to a strong team from Cleveland State. The two top finishers from our region qualify for the National Competition. The final round was judged by Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Supreme Court of Ohio, Judge Deborah Cook of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and Judge William Batchelder of the Ninth District Court of Appeals.
All of the competitors owe a debt of gratitude to Professor Dessin for her hard work in organizing this event.
The team is co-coached by Professor J. Dean Carro ('78) and Mrs. Joann Sahl ('86) who will accompany the team to New York.
