How many credit hours is Advanced Legal Research?

It is 1 credit hour.

How many modules will a student need to take to equal 1 credit hour?

That depends on each module. 14 instructional hours equals 1 credit hour. The modules will vary in number of instructional hours depending on the amount of work required to complete the module. The modules will range from 5 to 1 instructional hour(s).

Are the law students required to take Advanced Legal Research?

Yes. All law students are required to take this course.

When is ALR offered?

Students can register for ALR and complete the required modules in either the fall or spring semester. While students cannot begin ALR in the summer, a limited number of ALR elective modules are offered during the summer for continuing ALR students.

Will there be a limit on the number of Advanced Legal Research modules that the students can take?

There are no limits to the number of modules, but the number of students enrolled in each module may have to be limited just as sometimes other class sizes are limited. Preferences may be made for graduating law students.

How will Advanced Legal Research modules be graded?

The modules will be taken on a credit/no credit basis.

Will there be any required modules or can students choose any combination?

Two modules are required (Federal Legislative History and Federal Administrative Research) and must be taken by all law students the first semester they register for Advanced Legal Research.

Do the students have to pass a set number of modules or can they pass 4, fail the fifth, but still have enough instructional hours to get the 1 credit hour?

Students must pass the 2 required modules. If they fail any of the required modules, they will need to keep taking each required module until they pass it. If they fail an elective module and they need the module hours, they must select and successfully complete another module towards their 14 instructional hour collective requirement.

Will the law students be permitted to take the modules spread out over 1 to 2 years? In other words, can a student sign up and take the two required modules fall semester, a third elective module spring semester, a fourth elective module the following summer, etc.?

Yes. After taking the two required modules the first semester students register for the course, they can then decide when to take the remaining modules. Students can either take all the modules in one semester, or they may choose to take the remaining elective modules spread out over a few semesters as long as they successfully complete them by the time they graduate.

If the students can sign up for the modules over several semesters, when do they formally enroll and pay for the credit hour?

The students will need to enroll in the semester that they start by taking the first module. They will then get an IP (In Progress) in the course until they've completed 14 instructional hours worth of modules.
