The faculty members of the School of Law have been at the forefront of providing pro bono service to the community and the legal profession for many years. The following are but a few examples of their service.
Dean and Professor of Law Richard Aynes currently serves on the Ohio Supreme Court’s CLE Commission and the American Bar Association Section on Legal Education Questionnaire Committee. He recently completed service on the Ohio State Bar Association Task Force for New Lawyer Education and on the Akron Bar Association’s Task Force on Judicial Evaluation. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Summit County Legal Aid Society, now known as Community Legal Aid Services.
Professor Samuel Baumgartner served as an International Law Association (ILA) Observer, Hague Conference on Private International Law, a member of an ad hoc group of experts which drafted the new Swiss Act on Indirectly Held Investment Securities, and Research Coordinator, Project on Jurisdiction Over Corporations and Partnerships of the ILA. He currently serves as an International Consultant, ALI/UNIDROIT Transnational Rules and Principles of Civil Procedure.
Professor J. Dean Carro (’78) has presented dozens of Continuing Legal Education Programs throughout Ohio as well as presentations to local high schools and the Akron Explorer’s Club. He serves on the Federal Court Rules Advisory Committee, the Federal Court ADR Panel, numerous Akron Bar Association committees, is a founding member of the Scanlon Inn of Court and provides legal assistance to the residents of the Haven of Rest Homeless Shelter of Akron through the Akron Bar Association.
New Business Clinic Director Stephen Cook (’96) served on the board of the Outreach Community Living Services of Wayne County for many years. He still lectures to the group on Advanced Directives. He has also served as a guardian/guardian ad litem for 20 individuals over the past five years. He also provides legal assistance to residents of the Haven of Rest Homeless Shelter in Akron.
Professor William Jordan is the chair of the ABA Judicial Review Committee, Section on Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice and serves as a contributing editor of Administrative Law and Regulatory Law News.
Assistant to the Dean Margaret Matejkovic (’92) is currently a member of Leadership Akron’s Alumni Association Board of Trustees, the Akron Heart Association Board of Trustees, the Akron Bar Association Long Range Planning Committee (Chair), and the Edwin Shaw Hospital Development Foundation Board of Trustees (Chair of the Development Committee). She has also served as President of the University of Akron National Alumni Association and Law Alumni Association. She is a past board member of the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens Operating Board of Trustees, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Summit County and the Akron Bar Association.
Professor Jane Moriarty consults on ethics and evidence issues and conducts numerous CLE programs on those topics. She also conducts a persuasive writing seminar for Akron Community Legal Aid Services attorneys.
Professor Alan Newman conducts CLE programs on the Uniform Trust Code. He has served as a resource person for the Street Law program at his daughter’s high school.
Law Librarian and Professor Paul Richert is a frequent CLE presenter for the Law Alumni Association, the Area Agency on Aging, and NBI. He serves on his church’s cabinet and is chair of Selective Service Local Board 114.
Civil Litigation Clinic Director William Rickett serves on numerous Akron and Wayne County Bar Association committees, including the Mock Trial Committee. He has been a CLE presenter for the Ohio Judicial College and also makes frequent presentations in local public schools.
