No Heat, No Hot Water in Bierce

04/03/2014

Physical Facilities will be making mandatory repairs to the high temperature hot water system outside of Bierce Library. There will be no heat or hot water in the building for several weeks. To maintain a warm environment, there are temporary heaters throughout the library. Once the repair is made, hot water and heat/air conditioning will be available once again.

Bierce Library installing 'Race Card Project'

From Monday, Jan. 27, through Saturday, Feb. 15, UA students, faculty and alumni are encouraged to join in a conversation about race, ethnicity and identity by submitting their six-word race card essays in Bierce Library. The collection of candid submissions will be on display in the library throughout Rethinking Race 2014.

Book-based Art debuts at Bierce

Give a book to Buzz Spector, and he’s likely to stack it up with hundreds of other books or tear it apart page by page.

Now he is collaborating with students from The University of Akron's Myers School of Art in "Thoughts as Pages, Stacks as Memories," a free exhibition March 12 through April 18 in the lobby of UA's Bierce Library. In addition to Spector's works, the exhibition will feature works created by students in a painting class taught by UA Art Professor Matthew Kolodziej.

Opie Evans Exhibit to Open Feb. 10th

The University of Akron Archival Services, a division of University Libraries, is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition on the photography of Opie Evans at the Dr. Shirla R. McClain Gallery of Akron’s Black History and Culture with an opening reception on February 10th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Evans was a local reporter, broadcaster, publisher, and businessman and one of the earliest African-American photographers in Akron.

Archival Services Announces Completion of OHRAB Grant

Archival Services, a division of University Libraries, is pleased to announce the successful completion of a

grant to digitize, preserve and to make available online 153 historic technical reports from the Daniel Guggenheim Airship Institute, which was a part of the University’s College of Engineering from 1929 to 1949. The digitized reports, which are available online as fully searchable PDF documents, can be accessed at http://cdm15960.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/landingpage/collection/p15960coll3.

Archival Services Awarded OHRAB Grant

Archival Services of University Libraries recently received a $1,980 grant from the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board (OHRAB).  The funding will be used to digitize for preservation purposes and to make available online 60 technical reports from the Daniel Guggenheim Airship Institute. The institute was operated by The University of Akron from 1929 to 1949 and was a partnership with the California Institute of Technology, the Daniel Guggenheim Fund, and the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation in AkronOhio. Experiments conducted at the institute focused on the effects of turbulence and drag on airship hulls as well as meteorological observations. The technical reports are a valuable source of research that primarily document lighter-than-air flight, heavier-than-air flight, meteorology, aerodynamics, and G-force measurements. The reports are frequently used by students, historians, scholars, lighter-than-air enthusiasts, and researchers for a variety of research projects.

Opie Evans Photographs Digitized

Archival Services of University Libraries recently digitized a selection of images from the Opie Evans Papers.  The papers consist of approximately 40 cubic feet of archival materials documenting the life and work of African-American photographer, publisher, and businessman Opie Evans of Akron, Ohio. The collection also include hundreds of photographic prints and negatives taken or collected by Evans during his career that provide a rich visual history of the African-American community in Akron and surrounding areas during the middle of the twentieth century.  The images mostly depict African-American churches, workers, personalities, and social and fraternal organizations and events.  They also capture the 1964 and 1967 elections and the civil rights movement in Akron.

Confucius Institute’s Interactive Display in the Bierce Library

Beginning at noon on Friday, Jan. 28, the Confucius Institute’s interactive display on the ground floor of Bierce Library will begin to display both a live news feed from China’s Central Television Network (CCTV-9) and the interactive culture software. These will alternate every Friday at noon.

New Preview: Biography Reference Center (OhioLINK Trial)

Ebsco is offering a statewide trial to all Libraries Connect Ohio libraries (public, K-12, and OhioLINK) to the Biography Reference Center product. The LCO group currently subscribes to Wilson's Biography Reference Bank product in their LSTA-funded package, and this Ebsco database may be considered as a possible substitute for the Wilson product in FY 2011.
