Archival Services’ Image Graces Cover of College and Research Libraries News

11/14/2012

College & Research Libraries News recently selected an image from Archival Services for the cover of their November 2012 issue.  “This is quite an exciting honor for the archives and the libraries,” states S. Victor Fleischer, University Archivist and Head of Archival Services.  The newsletter provides articles on the latest trends and practices affecting academic and research libraries and serves as the official publication of American College & Research Libraries (ACRL).  ACRL, a division of the American Library Association, is a professional association of academic librarians and other interested individuals that is dedicated to enhancing the ability of academic library and information professionals to serve the information needs of the higher education community and to improve learning, teaching, and research.

The photograph on the cover is of a parade balloon depicting Superman being led down a New York City street during the 1940 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.  This image is one of approximately 500,000 negatives from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Records held in Archival Services of University Libraries and one of 23,300 that recently have been preserved, digitized, and made available online through the OhioLINK Digital Resource Commons.  Other images can be accessed online at http://drc.uakron.edu.  The project was made possible with a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  The cover image can be seen on the ACRL website at http://crln.acrl.org/
