Archival Services’ Photographs Selected for Archives Month Poster

October is Archives Month, a time to increase the general public’s awareness of archival materials and archival repositories. This year, the Society of Ohio Archivists (SOA) selected the theme “Both Local and Global: STEM Activity in Ohio.”

Archival Services, a division of University Libraries, submitted four photographs for possible inclusion in the SOA 2015 Archives Month Poster.  After online voting was tabulated, members of the society selected two images from Archival Services to grace this year’s poster.

The first photograph is an image of astronaut John Glenn being fitted in Akron for his space suit designed and manufactured by the B.F. Goodrich Company.  The company designed the space suits for the Project Mercury astronauts.  Glenn wore the suit on February 20, 1962 when he became the first American to orbit the Earth.

The second image is a photograph of the Goodrich scientific team led by research chemist Dr. Waldo Semon developing synthetic rubber during World War II.  Under the threat of war and with 90% of America’s rubber imported from overseas, government and industrial leaders sought alternatives to natural rubber to maintain American war productivity.

Archival Services collects, preserves and provides access to historic resources that primarily document the history of The University of Akron and the region. The department, which is located in Room LL10 of the Polsky Building in downtown Akron, is open to students, faculty, staff and the general public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more, visit Archival Services’ website at
