Records of an Akron non-profit organization devoted to preservation of the city's historic architecture, includes: organizational documents, trustee meeting minutes, newsletters, correspondence, program records, and mailing lists.


Private Industry Council of Akron

Range: 1979 - 1982 Size: 1.3 Record Group: 99/95

The Private Industry Council (PIC) of Akron was formed in 1978 as an outgrowth of President Jimmy Carter’s Private Sector Initiative Program.  The records consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, booklets, pamphlets, reports, surveys, photographs, and advertisements relating to PIC activities, including job training and hiring programs and advertising campaigns to attract new businesses to Akron.

Polsley, John J.

Range: 1839 - 1948 Size: 0.5 cubic feet Record Group: 99/136

Lieutenant Colonel John J. Polsley served in the American Civil War in the 8th Regiment Virginia Volunteers, which later became the 7th Regiment West Virginia Cavalry. Polsley was captured in 1863 and sent to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. The papers primarily contain correspondence to his wife, Ellen (Nelly) S. Donnally Polsley. He wrote of camp life and battles as well as his thoughts on war. Also included are letters to his father, Judge Daniel H. Polsley.

Petersen, Jorgen

The diary of Petersen, who was a Peninsula, Ohio, canal boat captain.

James, A. Pahlau, historian of Akron architecture, collection includes: brochures; postcards of Akron area, Summit County, U.S., and international; booklets; calendars; annual reports and publications of Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens; books; albums; videotapes; newsletters; drawings; and maps.


Collections in Archival Services are classified by the following ways:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections contains personal papers of local families/individuals and organizational records of local organizations/businesses.  Strengths of the collection are primary and secondary sources documenting the history of the rubber industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
