Reports, proposals, correspondence, and memoranda regarding the development of the Akron area. Mr. Suso was formerly a member of the University of Akron faculty and Director of the Akron Department of Planning and Urban Renewal.


Summit County Civilian Defense Council

Range: 1941 - 1946 Size: 3 cubic feet Record Group:

Scrapbooks, radio scripts, and publications. Scrapbooks (six) on civilian defense activities , Books (four) with publications on child care, nutrition, statistics, and handbooks on jobs within the council (medical corps, firefighters, bomb squads, etc.). Framed "Citation for Merit" for the work done by members of the Defense Council.

Shoman, Edward C. Papers

Edward C. Shoman was the marketing manager of big tire sales at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. Included in the papers are business correspondence, reports, and personal notes from his 34 years at Goodyear in addition to numerous Goodyear related photographs, slides, video tapes, and published materials that mostly document Goodyear's off-the-road tires.

Correspondence, clipping file and research notes of William Delbert Shilts, official of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, including a manuscript history of the company, 1898-1927.

Seiberling, Willard P.

Range: 1859 - 1964 Size: 29 cubic feet Record Group: 99/130

The Willard P. Seiberling Papers contain personal and business correspondence, drawings, photographs, negatives, blueprints, and legal documents from one of the members of Akron's "founding families" of the rubber and tire industry. While not a complete record of Willard Seiberling's business activities at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and Seiberling Rubber Co., it does give some insight into his work at these companies as well as his interest in railroads and aviation.

Congressional files, including: materials regarding Seiberling's congressional activities, correspondence, memorandums, notes, legislation drafts, miscellaneous materials relating to bills before Congress, reports, and news clippings. Subjects include President Nixon impeachment hearings, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Alaska lands, strip and surface mining, and public lands issues.

These papers offer a detailed account of the transfer of the synthetic rubber plant to private industry after World War II. The collection contains correspondence, telegrams, minutes of meetings, proposed legislation and hearings, statistics, articles from newspapers, and reports.

Collections in Archival Services are classified by the following ways:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections contains personal papers of local families/individuals and organizational records of local organizations/businesses.  Strengths of the collection are primary and secondary sources documenting the history of the rubber industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
