The Ninth Air Force is a numbered air force of the United States Air Force Air Combat Command that carried out tactical bombing of enemy targets in support of the Allied ground forces and engaged in air to air fighter combat against enemy aircraft in the North African Campaign and European Theater of World War II. The Ninth Air Force also engaged in combat operations during the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. The Ninth Air Force Association (9AFA) was established in 1990 to broaden public knowledge of the deeds and history of the Ninth Air Force and to honor and commemorate the sacrifices made by its members. The Archives of the 9AFA includes newsletters, membership lists, reunion programs, and photographs. It also contains unit histories and personal papers such as diaries, photographs, and oral histories of individuals who served in the Ninth Air Force, predominantly during World War II.

Foster, Robert J., Papers

Robert J. “Bob” Foster (1924-2009) of Randolph, Ohio served in the Navy during World War II and worked at Goodyear Aircraft Corporation and then Goodyear Aerospace for 39 years, from 1946 to 1985. He received three patents while working at Goodyear. His papers include correspondence, photographs, and blueprints relating to his life and work. 


B-26 Marauder Archives, Wilfred "Wally" Berg Collection

Wilfred T. “Wally” Berg (1908-2002) was an artist from Muskegon, Michigan who served as the photographer for the 17th Bomb Group of the 95th Bomb Squadron during World War II. He was stationed in North Africa, Italy, France, Austria, and Germany. His collection consists of photographic prints and negatives and notes on World War II as well as an extensive scrapbook made by Berg that includes photographs, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia.

B-26 Marauder Archives, Wendell A. Fetters Collection

Range: 1944 - 2012 Size: 1.36 Record Group: 100/29

Wendell A. Fetters (1924-2015) of Iowa served as a tail gunner on a B-26 Marauder in the 391st Bomb Group, 574th Bomb Squadron of the 9th Air Force during World War II. He flew 25 missions until being shot down and captured, spending the rest of the war in a German prison camp. After the war he served as an account representative and marketing manager and as Vice Commander and then Commander of the 391sth Bomb Group Association. His collection consists of correspondence with members of the 391st Bomb Group Association, newsletters, memoirs, and histories of the 391st Bomb Group.

Virgil L. Bell (1920-2002) served as a radio operator and mechanic on B-26 Marauders in the 17th and 319th bombardment groups of the 12th Air Force during World War II. Thelbert "Dick" H. Thomas (1918-1985) was a B-26 Marauder pilot with the 391st Bomb Group (BG) of the 572nd Bombardment Squadron (BS) during World War II before being reassigned to the 323 BG, 454 BS and ultimately the 323 BG, 457 BS. His collection includes military orders, correspondence that details Thomas’s army career, photocopies of photographs from his service, and other war-time documents including a graduation list and certificates.

Lt. Col. Robert L. "Hap" Holliday (1916-2013) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania served as a B-26 Marauder pilot in the 572nd and 573rd bomb squadrons of the 391st Bombardment Group during World War II. He flew 65 missions during the war, including the D-Day invasion. After the war Holliday worked as a sales engineer and later founder and president of R.L. Holliday Company. His papers include his military service records and correspondence and materials from the 391st Bomb Group Association, the B-26 Marauder Historical Society, and the B-26 Archives Advisory Council.

Ellinger (1920-2013) of Washington, D.C. served on a B-26 Marauder with the 322nd Bomb Group of the 449th Bomb Squadron during World War II and was a member of the B-26 Marauder Historical Society after the war. His oral video histories include 125 VHS tapes and digital copies on DVDs of oral history interviews conducted by Ellinger of World War II B-26 Marauder veterans.

The 319th Bombardment Group Reunion Association was organized in 1974 to plan reunions of members and preserve the group’s history, but disbanded in 1999.
