Student Information
The way to find print materials on reserve is to use the online UA Libraries Catalog:
- Go to http://library.uakron.edu/screens/opacmenu.html.
- Select an option to search either by instructor’s last name or course name. When you select the course name option, you
may enter either course title or course number in the search box.
- If neither of the above search options yields results, try a title search for the reserve item.
- Reserve materials are shelved behind Bierce and Science & Technology Libraries Circulation Desks and the Audio-Visual
Services Desk.
- University Libraries circulation policy requires borrowers to present their own Zipcard or other valid picture ID at the time of check-out. This
policy is strictly enforced at all UA library locations.
- The library will adhere to the circulation period requested by the instructor; only an instructor may change a reserve circulation period.
- Students are limited to two reserve items at any given time.
- Reserve materials may not be renewed.
- Two and four hour reserve items may not circulate outside of the library. Fines are $0.50 per hour.
- One, two, three, and seven day reserve items may leave the library for the specified time period only. Fines are $0.50 per day.
- Reserve materials that are more than 30 hours/days overdue are considered lost and will be billed to the borrower at a cost of $180.00 per item. Upon return, the fine will be
reduced to $100.00 per item. Reserve materials are considered a special collection. They are placed on reserve for the benefit of an entire class. Overdue fines for reserve
materials reflect the impact of late or missing material on all students enrolled in the course and will not be waived.
- Reserve materials should be returned to the Circulation Desk. Please do not place reserve materials in library drop boxes.
Instructor Information
- 25 item limit per course per semester.
- All copies of UA Libraries-owned books may be placed on reserve, if requested.
- The library will provide only one photocopy per instructor request. Additional copies, up to four per title, must be provided by the instructor.
- If an instructor requires reserve materials to circulate on the first day of the semester, then he or she should submit a reserve request to the Bierce Library Circulation Desk, Science & Technology Circulation Desk, or Audio-Visual
Services Desk TWO WEEKS prior to the first day of classes; otherwise the library does not guarantee the immediate availability of reserve materials.
- Requests not received two weeks prior to the start of the semester will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis; please bear in mind that this delay may be as long as ten business days.
- Books from the Main or Science Circulating collection
- Personal copies (for organization and security purposes, tattle tape, barcodes, call numbers, and reserve tape will be affixed to personal copies)
- Photocopies of material (in compliance with the U.S. Copyright Act)
- Reference materials, with the permission of the Reference Department Head
- Government documents, with the permission of the Reference Department Head
- Complete periodical issues or volumes
- Class notes, tests, exams, homework assignments, answer keys, workbooks, or any other non-published materials
- Interlibrary Loan materials
- OhioLINK materials
- The library will not, by photocopying, create an anthology.
- If an instructor submits a request to photocopy a chapter from a book owned by the UA Libraries, then the entire book will be placed on reserve.
- The first time that photocopied material is placed on reserve, the instructor must submit a Copyright Clearance Request Form.
- Photocopies of materials that have been placed on reserve during any previous semester may be accommodated in several ways:
- By securing permission from the copyright owner for continued use and providing the library with such proof - the University Libraries will seek copyright permission from the Copyright Clearance Center only. When permission cannot be obtained from CCC, the instructor must assume the responsibility of securing copyright permission.
- By University Libraries purchase, in sufficient quantity, of books containing chapter(s) requested for reserve
- By determining that it is permissible to freely photocopy the material for educational purposes (e.g. an instructor’s own work, U.S. Government Documents, American Psychological Association publications, etc.)
- Photocopied material for which no copyright permission has been secured will be placed on reserve for one semester only.
- When an instructor submits a reserve request for a book not owned by the UA Libraries, the Reserve Manager will initiate a purchase request for that title.
- When a book that has been requested for reserve cannot be located on the shelf or when the book has already been declared missing, the Reserve Manager will initiate a purchase request for that title.
- When a reserve request is placed for an article not available through the UA Libraries, the Reserve Manager will request a copy through Interlibrary Loan.
- At the end of each semester, the Reserve Manager will remove from reserve all materials without a pending re-request.
- Materials for which copyright permission has been denied will be removed immediately from reserve.
- Materials for which the cost of copyright clearance exceeds $300 will be removed immediately from reserve.
- Materials for which copyright permission is neither granted nor denied will be removed from reserve at the end of the semester. The UL Libraries will not place those materials on reserve again unless the faculty member can secure written copyright permission. Faculty members will be notified of any of the above actions.
- Photocopied materials and personal copies will be returned to the owning instructor(s) or department(s).
- UA Libraries materials will assume an available status and be returned to the shelf.
