Each federal publication is given a SuDoc (Superintendent of Documents) classification number. This SuDoc number allows publications by the same agency or department to be located together. The letter at the beginning of the call number indicates the originating agency. Numbers are treated in all cases as whole numbers. The colon - : - divides the stem, indicating the bureau or office, from the rest of the number, indicating the specific series or publication.
