How do I get to the library?
The University of Akron’s Bierce library is located at:

Where should I park if I am visiting The University of Akron?
Parking is available for those visiting The University of Akron and Bierce Library. Those who visit the library have to pay for parking. More detailed information of where to park can be viewed at:

Where can I find a map of the library?
There are four floors to The University of Akron’s Bierce Library. Various services and departments are can be found throughout the library. A detailed list of services by floor can be viewed here.

Where is the lost and found at Bierce Library?
The lost and found can be located at Circulation Desk. You can turn in any found items at any service or information desk at Bierce Library.

Where are the restrooms located?
Men’s and Women’s restrooms are located on each floor of the library. They are each located in the alcove near the stairs on each floor.

Audio-Visual Services

Can AV materials be checked out?
Many Audio-Visual materials can be checked out, like CD’s and DVD’s. These materials have a 7 day loan period.

Can AV materials be renewed?
No. AV items have a 7 day loan period and then must be returned .

Where can I view non-circulating videos?
There is a viewing room on the ground floor of Bierce Library in the Audio-Visual Services area.

How can I get a VHS, DVD, Cassette or CD copied?
The Audio-Visual Department offers a duplication service. Prices for materials and services can be viewed at: http://www.uakron.edu/its/learning/avs/mrc.php. Copies can only be made with non-copy-righted materials.

Circulation

How do I checkout and renew books?
Books can be checked out and renewed at the circulation desk. The circulation desk is located on the first floor of the library next to the main doors. Books can also be renewed by phone (330) 972-5355 or online by Viewing Your Circulation Record.

Where do I pick up my OhioLINK requested books?
OhioLINK books can be picked up and returned at the circulation desk. Pickup locations for OhioLINK books are available at Bierce Library, Science Library, Law Library, or Wayne College.

How can I renew my OhioLINK materials?
OhioLINK books may be renewed by calling Bierce Library at (330) 972-5355 or online by Viewing Your Circulation Record. OhioLINK books can be renewed up to four times, as long as the book has not been requested by another user.

How can I obtain books or articles that are held in storage?
Books from either Local Storage, which are located in the closed stacks in the lower level of the Polsky Building, or the NE Regional Depository can be requested by using the University’s online catalog. Requests for journal volumes, reference books or photocopies on an article from periodicals are available for request by submitting the following forms:

Where do I pay my library fines?
Library fines can be paid at the circulation desk. The circulation desk of Bierce Library is located on the first floor next to the main doors.

What happens if I lose a library book?
Library fines are billed directly to the patron. If book is returned the fine is then sometimes reduced. Fines vary between Bierce Library, the Science and Technology Library and OhioLINK materials. I have forgotten my pin, can it be reset?
Yes. Your pin can be reset by visiting or contacting the circulation desk. Your pin number is used to access your library record.

Coffee Shop

What are the hours of the Coffee Shop?
The Coffee Shop and Snack Room is open Monday – Thursday from 8:00 am-8:00 pm and Friday’s from 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Summer hours: Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., Friday 8:00-3:00 p.m.

The Coffee Shop can be found on the first floor of Bierce Library. It is near the front doors and the stairs of the library.

Can I access the library services from home?
Yes, but you have to prove you are a valid UA student, faculty or staff member. There are three different setups available. Use this link to decide which is best for you: http://www.uakron.edu/libraries/info/connect/.

What do I use my UAnet ID for?
Your UAnet ID can be used for online class registration, e-mail, logging into the computers, WebCT, accessing the library databases and creating a personal website.

What if I forget my UAnet password?
If you forget your UAnet password you can call the Computing Help Desk at (330) 972-6888 or you can visit in person at Bierce Library in Room 69.

What if my UAnet ID isn’t working?
If you have having problems with your UAnet ID call the Computing Help Desk at (330) 972-6888 or visit in person at Bierce Library in Room 69.

How can I get wireless internet on my personal laptop?
You need to have a compatible wireless network card for your laptop to access the internet on campus. For a list of compatible internet cards visit: https://www.uakron.edu/pages/its/hoss/helpdesk/campusnetwork.php. For installation assistance contact the Computing Help Desk in person at Bierce Library in Room 69 or by phone (330) 972-6888.

Electronic Reserves

What do I need to access electronic reserves?
The course number, department, or the instructors name is need to locate ERes materials. A course reserve password is also needed to view electronic articles. This password is supplied by your class instructor. Adobe Acrobat is often needed to open electronic reserve documents.

Government Documents

What kinds of materials can I find in Government Documents?Government Documents consists of federal publications and publications from the state of Ohio. The University of Akron is part of the Federal Depository program. Bierce Library has been a part of this program since 1963 and receives approximately 61% of government publications from the Government Printing Office (GPO).

Where is the Government Documents collection located?
Government Documents is located on the first floor of Bierce Library. It is located past the reference desk area and beyond the reference text collection.

How is the Government Documents collection arranged?
Each federal publication is given a SuDocs (Superintendent of Documents) classification number. This SuDocs number allows publications by the same agency or department to be located together.

Can Government Documents be checked out?
Many of the Government Documents can be checked out. Most of the Government Documents have barcodes but some still do not circulate. These items that do not circulate are typically stamped or labeled “Does Not Circulate.”

Interlibrary Loan/ILLiad

Who can use ILL?
Interlibrary Loan or ILL can be used by any currently enrolled student, faculty, or staff member at The University of Akron

How long does it take to receive ILL material?
It usually takes from 10-14 days to receive ILL requests. It is suggested you place your requests as early as possible to allow enough time for arrival.

How are articles delivered?
All articles received through Interlibrary Loan are delivered electronically to your UA e-mail address. Articles are in .PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader to open and view the file.

How much do ILL requests cost?
ILL requests are free of charge for UA students, faculty and staff. If a request needs immediate and urgent response a $3.00 charge will occur.

What is ILLiad?
ILLiad is a system used by Interlibrary Loan to make requests for needed books and articles. ILLiad is also used for managing your requests and locating electronically delivered articles.

Can I look at the status of my requests?
Yes. You can logon to ILLiad with your user name and password at https://uakron.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html. Once you have logged on you can then “Review Your Requests.” Here you can view electronically received articles, cancel requests and view outstanding requests.

Can I use the library if I am not a student, faculty, or staff member of the University?
Yes. If you wish to use the public computer workstations or checkout library materials you can become a Community Patron. Visit the circulation staff for more information or registration.
- Is there a fax machine available at the library?
A fax machine is not available that Bierce Library. Items can be faxed at the University’s DocuZip Centers. DocuZip Centers are located in the Student Union Building and in the Bookstore in the Polsky building.

Are there designated quiet areas in the library?
Yes. The third floor of the library is designated for quiet studying.

Are there areas in the library that can be used for group studying?
Yes. Bierce Library has 22 study rooms available for use by currently registered University
of Akron students, faculty, and staff. Study rooms are located on the second and third floor of the library. Rooms may be booked
online using the library catalog.
When not booked, rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis. These rooms are for groups of two or more and single students may be asked to relocate for larger groups.

What is OhioLINK?
OhioLINK is made up of 80+ colleges and universities all across the State of Ohio. It offers access to millions of books around the state. Books can be requested electronically through the OhioLINK catalog. Books usually arrive within five business days. Search the OhioLINK catalog here:

What does “patron barcode” refer to?
When you are asked to enter your “patron barcode” it refers to the long series of numbers on the back of your Zip Card. You can read more about your patron barcode at: http://www.uakron.edu/libraries/info/pin.php.

What is Reserves?
Reserves are usually books that are not a part of the general circulating collection. These are books made available by professors for particular classes and can be used within the library. For more information on Reserves visit:

Where can I find books on Reserve?
Books with a catalog location of “Bierce Reserve Room” can be located at the circulation desk. The circulation staff can retrieve the necessary Reserve item for you.

Where can I borrow one of the library laptops?
Bierce Library has 150 laptops available. Availability is on a first come, first serve basis. You need a valid Zip Card and a second picture ID to use a laptop. The Laptop Circulation Desk is located in Bierce Room 361, on the third floor near the elevator.

Is there someone in the library I can contact about my subject of study?
Yes. There are many subject bibliographers at The University of Akron’s Bierce Library. These librarians and their subject specialties can be viewed at:

Is my textbook available at the library?
The University of Akron’s library typically does not purchase textbooks, although some may be available. You can search the library catalog by a book’s title for more information.

Where can I find current periodicals and journals?
Current periodicals and journals are kept on the ground floor at the back of the library. Back issues of periodicals and journals can also be found on the ground floor of library, these are listed alphabetically by title.

Can I checkout a journal?
The majority of journals do not circulate. However there are some journals, those found with the circulating books, can be checked out.

Where is the Curriculum Center?
The Curriculum Center is located on the first floor of Bierce Library. It is located towards to back of the library.

What kinds of materials are found in the Curriculum Center?
The resources in the Curriculum Center are directed towards the College of Education and to help preparation for teaching. The Curriculum Center has five main types of resources: juvenile literature, picture files, pamphlet files, textbooks and teacher resources, and teaching devices (flash cards, games, etc.).

How can I get books and/or articles not available at UA libraries?
When books are unavailable through UA libraries and OhioLINK they can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. If articles are not available at the UA libraries they can also be requested through Interlibrary Loan. You must submit an ILLiad request for needed items. Microforms

How do I know which machines read microfilm and which read microfiche?
The Canon microfilm reader/printer can read both microfilm and microfiche materials.

Can information from microfilm or microfiche be copied?
Yes. All machines are connected to a printer. Copies made on microfilm and microfiche are free of charge.

What kinds of materials are held in the microforms area?
Many older issues of journals, magazines, and newspapers are found here in the Microforms area. These items are found on either microfiche or microfilm. There are many microfilm reader/printer machines that allow paper copies of these materials to be made.

How do I print at the library?
There are three print release stations at Bierce Library, two on the first floor near the Reference/Information desk and one on the third floor in the lap top room.
Print Instructions:
- Send your document to print.
- Then go to a nearby print station and swipe your Zip Card
- Select and print your document.
- The charge is instantly deducted from your account.
- Your document will then be printed immediately from the same print station.
- All documents are printed on standard 8 ˝” x 11” paper.

How much does it cost to print at the library?
Printing costs $.07 per page. Payment must be made with your Zip Card or copy cards.

How do I make copies at the library?
Photocopiers at the library require the use of a Zip Card or copy card. You must first swipe your Zip Card and leave it in for the duration of your copying. Once you have swiped your Zip Card you can then begin copying.

Where are the photocopiers located?
Photocopiers are located on the first floor of the library near the Coffee Shop and on the ground floor near the stairs. Additional photocopiers are located on the ground floor near the current periodicals.

How can I add money to my Zip Card?
Money can be added by use of the Zip Card machines, located on the first floor near the Reference Desk and on the ground floor near the stairs. Zip Card cash deposits can also be at the Coffee Shop, located on the first floor. Credit/Debit Card deposits can be made at the online office:

Can I make copies and print without my Zip Card?
Yes. Copy cards can be purchased for a dollar at the black Zip Card machines. These machines are located on the first floor near the Reference Desk and on the ground floor near the stairs. Money must be added after purchase of the card.

Can I make color copies or print in color at the library?
No, the library does not offer color copying or printing. Color copies and printing can be done at the DocuZIP centers. DocuZIP centers are located at the Student Union Building and in the Bookstore at the Polsky Building.

Can I print from the library laptops?
Yes. The library’s laptops are networked to the print stations located on the first floor near the Reference Desk.

Can I print from my personal laptop?
Yes, but your laptop has to be configured for the University’s wireless system. Visit the Computing Help Desk for more information, located in Bierce Library Room 69 or online at http://www.uakron.edu/its/hoss/helpdesk/index.php.

How do I log onto WebCT?
Use your WebCT username and password is the same as your UAnet ID and password.

How do I print .PDF files (Adobe Acrobat files)?
When printing .PDF files use the print icon located on the article or file. Do not go to “File” and “Print” from the top of the page, this will only print blank pages.

How can I print PowerPoint files with multiple slides on one page?
After selecting print the print box will then appear. Before selecting OK, change the “Print What” section from Slides to Handouts. This is located at the bottom left hand side of the print box. When the print is changed to Handouts you can then select how many slides you want per page.

How do I print my Speech Class certificate?
In order to print the certificate for Speech Classes you have to press:
Ctrl + P
This command will print out the certificate.

Zipspace

What is zipspace?
Zipspace is 50MB of storage. It can be used to save computer files, like Word and Excel documents.

Who has zipspace?
Every student, faculty and staff member at The University of Akron has zipspace, but only with a valid UAnet ID and password.

Who can access my zipspace?
Only you can access your zipspace. Information saved on your zipspace is associated only with your UAnet ID and password.

How do I save files to my zipspace?
The “My Documents” folder on the library workstation computers are directly linked to your zipspace.
