A unique professional learning event at The University of Akron, the Bridging Literacies Symposium offers a day of thoughtful and thorough conversations around literacy, economics and society.

Symposium Strands

  • Foundational Literacy provides the underpinnings for teaching reading and writing.
  • Financial Literacy focuses on issues related to income, wealth/poverty, and society. In particular, the role of personal money management and wise financial decision making in building a successful future.
  • Transliteracy is the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media.

The Summit Council for Reading Readiness (SCRR) is a professional education community that helps Summit County educators support the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, signed into law in 2012 as part of Ohio Senate Bill 316.  The community is made possible by a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and is a partnership among three entities: (1) The UA Center for Literacy; (2) the Summit Education Initiative and (3) Summit County school districts. 

The purpose of the Summit Council is to support policy change in Ohio and excellence in teaching through a cycle of professional development, action research, and dissemination for pre-K through grade 3 educators to address the needs of early reading.

Finding it difficult to work everything into your lessons each day?

Attend Center for Literacy workshops to learn effective teaching methods for implementing reading and writing strategies in your classroom. Literacy coaches will model K-6 lessons that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and share ways to differentiate your lessons. Teachers will collaborate to write their own lesson plans! Bring a few of your favorite picture books or chapter books!

The Third Grade Reading Guarantee Law (ORC 3313.608) requires that all students are reading at grade level by the third grade. It also established new credentials that are required for any teacher providing the daily reading instruction for students affected by the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. One option for acquiring a set of approved credentials will be a passing score on a rigorous test of principles of scientifically research-based reading instruction, Praxis 5203 Teaching Reading: Elementary Education with a qualifying score of 162.

The highly-qualified staff at the Center for Literacy can help prepare K-3 teachers for the Third Grade Reading Guarantee with an 8-week blended learning workshop. Our instructors have direct experience with classroom and online instruction and professional development.
