Akron, Ohio, Oct. 6, 2006

The University of Akron's Medina County
University Center will open its doors in fall 2007. The university has
awarded eight construction contracts for the 22,000-square-foot,
state-of-the-art facility in Lafayette Township.

According to Jim Doutt, executive director of the Medina County Economic
Development Corp., additional funds are being actively pursued at the local,
state and federal levels to allow for the expansion of the center to 33,000
square feet.

"We are pleased to be able to complete this high-quality facility by next
fall, due to the exceptional support of Medina County leaders," says Dr.
Elizabeth J. Stroble, UA senior vice president and provost and chief
operating officer. "Even though the doors are not officially open, students
are already enrolled in a new Polymer Certification Program offered through
the center."

Contracts were awarded to Meridian Construction (general), Moser
Construction (concrete), Superior Erection (structural steel), Duer
Construction (masonry), Schindler Elevator (elevator), S.A. Comunale (fire,
plumbing, HVAC), and Speelman Electric (electrical). The low bid was
accepted in each case. The Ruhlin Company/Panzica Construction Company of
Sharon Center is the construction manager for the project.
