"So Do You Really Want to be a Politician?"
Have you thought about running for a public office, but just don't know what it all involves?
This new series of information-packed workshops is designed to help County citizens become aware of how serving in the public sector provides opportunities for them to use their skills, talents, and experience to create positive change in their community.
There are several board and trustee openings this year throughout the County, but prior to running for an office, careful consideration of themselves and the political climate should be made by potential candidates. With the application deadline set for August 7, potential candidates have time to attend these workshops and absorb a wealth of valuable information that will get them ready to run.
The first workshop, set for June 6, entitled “Researching the Office You Are Seeking” will provide insight for people to dig deep and think about why they are considering running; help them to understand the aspects of budget and finance; how to research the duties, restrictions and requirements of the office; and provide an overview of the petition process. Speakers currently include: Commissioner Steve Hambley, County Auditor Mike Kovack, Medina County Board of Elections Director Carol Lawler and Deputy Director Carol Gurney, and County Prosecutor Dean Holman.
Commissioner Steve Hambley, says the critical outcome of this new workshop program is “Informed and knowledgeable candidates means that voters will not only see better campaigns, but likely have more informed choices.”
People can make a difference in our community. By running for a public office, the democratic vision of our founding fathers is sustained, and the system of governing lies in the capable hands of our citizens.
