Prof. Jeantet arrived in Faverges today, Friday, a day
before the group, in order to make last-minute arrangements for
the Program.
Prof.
Jeantet's bags did not make the connection and arrived in Geneva
some hours after him, on a later flight . . . so it was arranged
that the airline should send his bags to his village later in
the day. Which should remind us all of the importance of labeling
our bags well, inside and out!
(BTW the bags were
delivered to a nearby hotel around 4pm French time),
Beanie the cat weathered
his sixteenth Atlantic crossing like the seasoned traveler that
he is, and after re-acquainting himself with the house, is now
wandering about the village, on the prowl for those delicious
French mice and voles of which he is so fond.
Student Joe Morris,
having been unable to find a seat on the same flight as most of
the other students, chose to fly into Paris a day earlier and
take a train
directly
from the airport down to Albertville, which is about a twenty-minute
drive from Faverges. Since we knew his scheduled time of arrival,
Joe's French mom Joêlle Staubli, AFA president Yvette Millot
and Prof. Jeantet went to wait for Joe at the Albertville train
station. The train arrived on time, and off stepped a tired but
happy student, confident now that he wouldn't be left stranded
in a faraway place...
The
2003 University of Akron Summer Program in the Alps' first
report will be posted Saturday evening, after the students have
arrived. Students are scheduled to leave Cleveland today, May
9, arriving in Geneva (Switzerland) on Saturday morning, May 10th.
A chartered bus will be waiting for them in Geneva; the hour-and-thirty-minute
drive should bring them into Faverges around 11:00am French time
where they will be greeted by their host families and taken home
in time for their first French lunch.
The University's
Office of the Controller has wired the Program funds to the bank
in France, so that we can get started in earnest. Many thanks
to Controller Ruth Matty and her able assistant, without whose
help we could not have accomplished this task so easily.
Information about
the weather in Faverges is posted below.
Weather
forecast for the weekend of May 10-11
The weather today
Friday is in the 60s, partly sunny.
Saturday, May
10th : Temperatures range from the low 50s at night to the high
70s in the day. Partly sunny . . . very much the type of weather
we're having in Ohio, minus the tornadoes !
Prof. Jeantet and AFA
president Yvette Millot will be in Geneva to greet the student
group.
For up-to-date
weather information for Annecy, which is located just a few miles
down the valley from Faverges, click on the sun/cloud icon below.

On
the Annecy weather page, temperatures are displayed in degrees
Celsius. To get Farenheit equivalent, a quick & dirty
way is to double the Celsius temperature and add 30. This
is close enough for most purposes...For example, 27°
Celsius, doubled, gives 54, to which we add 30, which yields
84°
degrees Farenheit.
The correct formula, [ (C x
9/5) + 32 = F ] gives a result of 81°
Farenheit. The quick & dirty method is clearly close enough
for practical purposes.
Once
the students are all safely home with their French families, an
illustrated report will be posted on the "First Report" page. It should be online Saturday evening..
