PASSAGE The PASSAGE learning community consists of two structured experiences (PASSAGE-I and PASSAGE-II) that promote the academic and social integration of students of color into The University of Akron. It also allows students to develop a strong affiliation with the academic culture of the University through collaborative and cooperative learning, while enhaneing technological skills.
To qualify for the PASSAGE learning community you must be:
- Be a first-year student at The University of Akron
- Be a full-time baccalaureate (bachelor’s degree) student
- Have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Have an ACT composite score of 16 or SAT English score of 350
- Complete a 250 word essay
Additionally, as a member of one of the PASSAGE learning communities, students must be ethically and socially responsible for their actions. Both students and faculty are expected to cultivate a community of learners built on trust and academic integrity, therefore self-discipline is important.
Learning communities are designed to promote collaborative and interactive mastery of one or more given college courses. Students are encouraged to discuss course content and lecture material as well as support other students in mastering subjects.
The PASSAGE-I learning community curriculum is designed to help first-year students meet their General Education Requirements. PASSAGE-I students typically have the following majors: Psychology, Sociology, Communications, Business, Education, Political Science, or Undecided.
The PASSAGE-II learning community is specifically structured to assist students with completing the educational requirements, of Education. Passage-II students typically have the following majors: Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, and Nursing.
This program provides opportunities for students to increase their computer and Internet skills to enhance their academic performance and career preparation. PASSAGE instructors incorporate technology practices in course activities. These activities include:
- Accessing course content, assignment posting and other relevant information
- Learning how to access and use on-line databases, electronic journals and libraries
- Use of discussion listserv and email
- Interactive chatting among students, mentors and faculty
- Utilizing technology for course and time management purposes
- Incorporating technology into individual and group presentations
- Introduction to computer-based instruction and use of software tutorials
