ADVANCE

ADVANCE is a special two-day orientation program for students of color. It gives the participants an insider’s view on how students of color can succeed their first year at The University of Akron.

Participants meet with current UA students, faculty, and administrators, who will help incoming students learn how to identify and handle the challenges typically encountered in the freshmen year.

ADVANCE Workshops include:

How Can I Get Involved: Leadership Opportunities. Research shows that the students who get involved are more successful than those who do not. This workshop will expose students to leadership and leadership opportunities available on campus.

The College Classroom: University of Akron professors discuss expectations in the classroom. Academic success strategies are discussed, as well as, predictors of success!

Financial Aid: Families are given an overview of the financial aid process and the various costs associated with attending college.

Panel Sessions: These sessions allow incoming students and parents an opportunity to ask questions that affect college students. Feel free to ask questions about on and off campus housing, student organization involvement, social activities, academic planning, campus safety, and community resources. This is an open dialogue.

How Can I Help my Student Succeed: Parents also receive information and guidance in how to help in their student’s success.

Reasons to ADVANCE include:

  • Experience residence hall living with an overnight stay
  • Participate in interactive informational sessions
  • Review of financial aid process
  • Meet other students of color
  • Learn more about our student support services
