Peer Mentors

What is the Peer Mentor Program?
Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between an experienced University of Akron student (mentor) and a new first-year student (mentee). This relationship is voluntary and it develops over a one year period of time with clearly defined roles and expectations. The Peer Mentor Program comes from the premise that students who are connected with the University will feel less isolated, enhancing their first year experience. Mentees will become familiar with the campus resources, resulting in better academic performance and chances of matriculation from first year to graduation.

Some benefits of the Peer Mentor Program include access to the Office of Multicultural Development Laptop loan program, enhanced self-motivation and discipline and academic and professional support.

Who are Peer Mentors?
Peer Mentors are student-leaders and paraprofessional staff members in the Office of Multicultural Development. They are upper-class undergraduates with a minimum of 2.75 GPA, and who have demonstrated the ability to relate well with first year students from varied ethnic, social, and cultural backgrounds. They also possess good interpersonal and time management skills. Peer Mentors are committed to an affirming environment that facilitates, through the mentoring relationship, the success of student-mentees.
