Biography

Brooks Toliver teaches several of the graduate music history courses as well as the undergraduate music appreciation course, "Exploring Music: Bach to Rock." He received his Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from UCLA in 1994, having written a dissertation on the French Composer Claude Debussy. He has published articles on the subjects of medieval Italian music, Debussy's early song recordings, the influence of Walk Whitman's Poetry on Debussy, and Verdi's opera, Otello. Current interests include Mendelssohn's piano music and the historical connections of music to nature.
