Imaging Ellipsometer

1. Lab Description and Capabilities

  • Spectroscopic ellipsometer with wavelength range from 380 nm to 1700 nm
  • Imaging capabilities with 1-2 micron resolution
  • Brewster angle imaging
  • Angles scanning range from around 40-90o with a resolution of 0.001o

2. Deliverables

  • Thickness analysis of metal, metal oxide, and organic coatings
  • Non-destructive imaging analysis of how corrosion proceeds away from a pinhole or a scratch
  • Absorption of water in organic coatings
  • Optical characterization of metal, ceramic, or coatings for tribological applications
  • Brewster angle imaging to map organic layers on water surfaces

3. Major Equipment and Specific Minor Equipment

  • Imaging ellipsometer with a spatial resolution of 1-2 micrometers
  • Spectroscopic unit from 360 to 1000 nm, which includes source and monochromator
  • Objectives (5x, 10x, and 20x)
  • Optical vibration isolation system
  • Accessories such as solid-liquid cell, kinetic SPR cell, and temperature control unit ranging from 5°C to 75°C
  • NIR extension up to 1700 nm (which includes source and detector)
  • Broadband diode laser (658 nm, 50 mW)
  • Sample handling stage (1 micron x 1 micron resolution)
