New Director and Name for UA School of Law Institute

Akron, Ohio, Feb. 28, 2005 — Prominent Akron attorney Frank E. Quirk has been named director of The University of Akron School of Law's Miller-Becker Institute for Professional Responsibility.

Quirk has been a member of the law firm of Brouse McDowell since 1961 with a practice concentrating in business law and business litigation. He served as the firm's managing partner from 1989-98 and continues to serve as Of Counsel to the firm. He is a former president of the Akron Bar Association and served on its Grievance Committee. He also is active in the Ohio State Bar Association and has served on its Legal Ethics and Professional Conduct Committee and its subcommittee that evaluated and recommended amendments to Ohio's Code of Professional Responsibility.

“As director of the Miller-Becker center Frank Quirk will be at the forefront of promoting ethics and professionalism in the region,” says Richard Aynes, dean of the UA School of Law. “The School of Law and the local legal community are very fortunate to have a person of Frank's stature and background in this leadership role.”

The Miller-Becker Institute was founded with a grant from Akron attorney Joseph G. Miller in 1992 as the Joseph G. Miller Institute for Professional Responsibility for the study and practice of legal ethics. William C. Becker directed the institute until his death in July 2003. Becker, a retired B.F. Goodrich vice president and general counsel, served the School of Law for nearly 20 years teaching legal ethics and as an associate dean.

At the behest of Miller in recognition of Becker's decades of service to the profession, the community, and the Law School, the institute was renamed in Becker's honor. Miller, who has been a generous supporter of The University of Akron, passed away on Feb. 14.
