LAW STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE TO TSUNAMI RELIEF

University of Akron School of Law students participated in a nationwide program led by LexisNexis to help the tsunami disaster relief effort. LexisNexis teamed with the Red Cross to allow students to contribute their LexisNexis Ultimate Reward points to the relief effort. Students earn the points by conducting legal research, attending training or completing educational exercises. The points can then be redeemed for prizes. UA students chose to donate their points to the relief project and made the second largest donation — $1,294, almost 9 percent of the overall national contribution.

PRESIDENT OF GERMAN UNIVERSITY TO DELIVER KNIGHT LECTURE

Dr. Wolfgang A. Herrmann, president of the Technical University of Munich, will present the 19th Charles M. Knight Lecture at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the Student Union Theatre. His topic is "N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: Efficient Catalyst Promoters."

The Knight lecture will be preceded by two technical lectures by Herrmann on Monday, April 25:

·"Methyltrioxorhenium (VII): A Versatile Catalyst in Fine Chemicals Synthesis" will be presented in Knight Chemical Laboratory 321 at 9:55 a.m.

·"Organometallic Catalysis - Contributions to Science and Technology" will be presented in Mary Gladwin Hall 111 at 3 p.m.

MATH LECTURE ON APRIL 15

Dr. Jonathan King of the University of Florida will present “The Firing Squad Problem, or How You Think About Things Bigger Than Your Brain" at noon on Friday, April 15, in the College of Arts & Sciences building 135. The lecture, which is part of the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mathematics' colloquium series, is free and open to the public.

POLYMER ENGINEERING SEMINARS APRIL 12 AND 15

Dr. Kevin Cavicchi from the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts will present "Fabricating Ordered Nanoporous Thin Films From Block Copolymer Templates" at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, in the Aggarwal Lecture Hall (Room 130), Polymer Engineering Academic Center.

On Friday, April 15 at 2 p.m. in the Aggarwal Lecture Hall, Dr. Charles L. Tucker III from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will present "Microstructural Development for Polymer Blends in Chaotic Flows."

SPEAKER FROM AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB TO LECTURE

D.W. Repperger of the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton will present “New Biomedical Image Enhancement Algorithms Based on Nonlinear Dynamics” at The University of Akron at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, in the Auburn Science and Engineering Center 122. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 330-972-6580.

HOSPITALITY CLUB'S HAWAIIAN LUAU TO RETURN

The University of Akron Hospitality Club will hold a Hawaiian luau with live music at 6:30 p.m., on Friday, April 22, in the Crystal Room Restaurant in Gallucci Hall. On the menu: luau corn chowder, lomi lomi salmon, strawberry sorbet, seared toasted macadamia nut mahi-mahi with ako-miso sauce, chicken long rice with stir-fried vegetables and haupia for dessert. Plus, tea and coffee will be offered. Cost is $35 per person. For reservations, call 330-972-6615.
