Deborah Owens Named To Buckeye Institute Board

Akron, Ohio, Jan. 18, 2007 — Deborah Owens of Richfield, associate professor of marketing and international business in The University of Akron's College of Business Administration, has been named to the board of the Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions.

Owens says she is pleased to renew her involvement with the Buckeye Institute. The research the institute provides is very important to Owens, as it supports the use of market-based principles to solve the economic and social issues facing Ohio.

“As Ohio transitions from an agricultural- and manufacturing-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, we need to determine how to best use our scarce resources to provide meaningful incentives to reach our goals of better educating our students and attracting and retaining Ohio businesses,” Owens says.

“I love Ohio, and from a selfish perspective I want my four children to stay here and find jobs here,” she adds. “Unfortunately, without major changes to our tax and educational policies, I think more young people, including my own, will look elsewhere for economic reasons."

Owens is member of the Faculty Advisory Board for UA's Fisher Institute for Professional Selling. She is one of the author's of Direct Marketing in Action, recently published by Praeger, in conjunction with The University of Akron's Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing, and has had her work published in several scholarly journals.

For the past eight years, she represented Summit, Portage, Trumbull and Geauga counties on the State Board of Education. In addition, she has served as president of the Summit County School Board and as a member of the boards of Abstinence, the Better Choice Inc. and Canal Square YMCA.

The Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions is a nonpartisan research and educational institute that was founded in 1994. Based in Columbus, the institute is devoted to providing research and analysis to policymakers. The Buckeye Institute focuses particularly on the areas of taxation and government spending, regulation and education.
