UA Law Students Place 2nd at National Tournament

Akron, Ohio, Nov. 6, 2007 – University of Akron law students placed second in the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) Tournament, which brought the nation's top 16 law school trial teams to NITA's Louisville, Colo., Education Center from Oct. 25-27. The winning UA trial team included Kristen Moore and John Rubis of Canton; John Ramsey of Huron; and Marc Sugerman of Akron. John Ramsey received the Best Advocate award for the semifinal and final rounds.

“Being the national runner-up when competing against the top 16 trial programs in the country is a tremendous accomplishment for our advocates. More importantly, the skills that these students developed while preparing for the tournament will serve them well throughout their careers as trial lawyers,” said Coach John Antel.

The three-day tournament is the brainchild of Professor Charles E. “Chuck” Kirkwood of the UA School of Law. Since 1989, the top trial-advocacy law schools have been invited to compete based on their performance in two open student trial competitions, the National Trial Competition and the AAJ (formerly ATLA) National Student Trial Advocacy Competition.

The University of Akron School of Law promotes justice, the protection of individual liberty and the rule of law through commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. The School of Law's competition teams have a long history of excellence on the regional and national levels. To learn more, visit www.uakron.edu/law.
