UA Hosts Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events
Akron, Ohio, Jan. 3, 2008 — The University of Akron's Office of Multicultural Development will host a community dialogue discussion, activities fair and leadership conference on Monday, Jan. 21 to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All events are free and open to the public. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Dialogue Discussion — "Excellence in Education — It's Everyone's Issue," 9:30 a.m., UA Student Union Theatre. The Rev. Dr. Marvin A. McMickle of Antioch Baptist Church will lead this discussion, which will challenge students, educators and the community to honor King's legacy by uniting to address important community issues. Obie Shelton of WKYC-TV will be the featured violinist. UA's Office of Multicultural Development and Academic Achievement Programs will sponsor this event. For more information, call 330-972-7030. Martin Luther King Jr. Activities Fair — 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., UA Student Union Ballroom A. An annual event, the activities fair features more than 25 student and community organizations providing activities for students in grades K-12. Activities encourage non-violence and civic responsibility and include face painting, coloring and crafts, an African dance workshop, musical performances, and historical information on the civil rights movement and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. UA's Pan African Center for Community Studies sponsors the event.
